What do I need for Nachos?

One thing I love about nachos, is how customizable they are! You can make them any way you want, but here are a few of my favorite ingredients!

  1. Tortilla Chips: Opt for sturdy, thick chips that can withstand the weight of the toppings.
  2. Cheese: For this recipe, I used Hoosier Hill Farm Spicy Southwest Cheese Powder. I added water and made it into a dip-like consistency for ultra creamy nachos. Then, I topped it with a cheese that melts well, like cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend of both.
  3. Protein: Consider adding cooked ground beef, shredded chicken, or black beans for added substance and flavor.
  4. Salsa: Use your favorite salsa or make your own using fresh tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and lime juice.
  5. Guacamole: Prepare a simple guacamole by mashing ripe avocados with lime juice, salt, and any additional seasonings you prefer.
  6. Sour Cream: Add a dollop of cool and creamy sour cream for a delightful contrast to the spicy elements.
  7. Additional Toppings: Get creative with toppings like sliced pickled jalapeños, diced tomatoes, black olives, diced red onions, or fresh cilantro!

Why Should I Use a Cheese Sauce When I Could Just Use Normal Cheese?

This specific nacho recipe is supposed to result in the ultimate creamy, crunchy nacho mash-up possible. Because of this desired result, using a creamy cheese sauce, like the Spicy Southwest cheese sauce from Hoosier Hill Farm, helps to meld all the flavors together!

  • 1 cup Hoosier Hill Farm Spicy Southwest Cheese Powder
  • 2 cups Hot Water
  • 1 can Beans (refried or black)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375F.
  • Now, start off by cooking the beef and spice mixture on the stove in a heavy bottomed pan, I used a cast iron skillet. Cook until fully cooked through, then remove from heat and allow to cool for about 10 minutes.
  • Next, combine the hot water with the cheese powder. Whisk until thickened and it has the consistency of a dip.
  • Line a sheet tray with aluminum foil. This will make for easy clean up.
  • Begin layering your nachos. Start by adding a sturdy base layer of tortilla chips.
  • Atop the tortilla chips, add half of your cooked meat.
  • Then, add half of the cheese sauce putting globs of the spicy southwest cheese sauce all over the top, and making sure to cover as much as you can.
  • Next, add the beans, spreading around evenly.
  • Finish it off with the pickled jalapeños.
  • Repeat the layering structure, tortilla chips, meat, cheese, beans, jalapeños one more time.
  • Once your two layers are constructed, sprinkle the shredded cheese over top and pop into the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the nachos are warm.
  • Top your portion of nachos with desired toppings and enjoy!
